Allianz Rugby Speaker of the Year 2014
07 November 2014 | The Brewery
Three more contenders take to the stage to try and take Martin Bayfield’s trophy! You decide on the eventual winner with fully interactive voting. Who will go on to compete in Sporting Speaker of the Year on the 28th November?
Our contenders are now confirmed…
Former England & British Lions rugby player AUSTIN HEALEY
Austin Healey is so outspoken (and often outrageous) that he has earned the nickname the Leicester Lip! Merseyside-born Austin was one of the most versatile players ever to pull on an England shirt, winning 51 caps in a variety of positions. His career as a banker with Credit Suisse was interrupted, as he became a regular television celebrity. He proved he had nifty footwork off the rugby pitch when coming fourth in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing, and became a team captain in Hole in the Wall. Now he is one of the front men on BT Sport for all their Premiership coverage. He is Mr Competitive! Did you see him on ITV’s Splash?
Former England and Leicester Tiger BEN KAY
His arrival at Leicester Tigers coincided with the 1999 World Cup where this premiership unknown was given the chance to shine as he helped Leicester lift the title in May. The following season Ben was rewarded with his first England cap against Canada in 2001. That game cemented his place in the England side, and by the end of the season, Ben had forged the world’s most formidable 2nd row partnership with Martin Johnson for both club and country. Ben’s big year came in 2003: a Grand Slam at the 6 Nations, England’s first ever Test victory on Australian soil and an away victory against the mighty All Blacks with Ben at the heart of the game. In 2007 he was the only English player to see every minute of action in the Rugby World Cup. And in 2008/09, Ben played an incredible and unmatched 35 out of 36 games for the Tigers, earning him an award for outstanding service to the club. Now a front man on BT Sport with Austin. The rivalry between these two will be outstanding!
Former British and Irish Lions and Scotland International GEORGE ‘DODDIE’ WEIR
Doddie was first capped for Scotland against Argentina in 1990. A mainstay of the team throughout the 1990’s, he was a recognisable figure around the park and fan favourite of the Murrayfield crowd. An excellent line-out specialist, he was selected as part of the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 1997. Doddie’s glittering career saw him win 61 caps in seven years and following a brave recovery from a horrific knee injury the sports star remained the power house of the scrum until his retirement in 2004. Today, Doddie is one of the UK’s top professional sports speakers, bringing his entertaining anecdotes from his career and his charming personality to every event. I wonder if he can charm his way to the Rugby Speaker of the Year 2014 title!?
Your witty MC for the afternoon MARTIN BAYFIELD
Rugby Speaker of the Year 2013 champion, Martin, has handed down the baton to these three contenders and is this year hosting our annual lunch. This giant of Rugby Union will be sure to entertain us throughout the afternoon and keep our competitors in check… But who will steal his crown?
